Woodlands

Over much of Manitoba grasslands and woodlands compete for dominance. Historically woodland encroachment was kept at bay by wildfires and drought. Fire suppression on the prairies has led to a slight increase in woodlands relative to grasslands but there are still less than 10% of the original, high-quality aspen parkland woodlands remaining. The soil upon which aspen parkland grows is typically quite fertile and woodlands are commonly being cleared for agricultural purposes and other urban and industrial development. The clearing of woodlands or “bush” can lead to decreased wildlife populations, lower carbon sequestration, increased soil erosion, and increased runoff. MHHC is working to protect the remaining high quality woodland areas of Manitoba.
