Conservation Opportunities

Species at Risk

Unfortunately, like many, if not all regions of the world, Manitoba has many species whose populations are in decline and a few that have already been lost completely (extirpated). MHHC is actively working in Manitoba to preserve the habitat required for species at risk found in our Province. By protecting required habitat and the maintenance of that habitat through active management, including controlled burns, grazing and mowing, the Corporation is working to stabilize or grow threatened species’ populations.

If you own land that provides habitat for species at risk and you would like to see that land protected, forever, then MHHC may be able to assist you through its Habitat Stewardship Program. Through this program a conservation agreement would be placed on the habitat specific to the target species’ needs and the land will be managed in a way that benefits the at risk species. Often, no change to your current management regime is needed and you can receive a one-time cash payment or a donation receipt. Types of habitat that are eligible for funding typically include grasslands, riparian areas and sand prairie but other types of habitat are considered if there is a known species at risk that inhabits the area.

For a complete list of species at risk, visit Environment Canada’s Species at Risk website or the Manitoba Conservation website.
