Conservation Opportunities

Streams and Rivers

The area alongside streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands are knows as "Riparian Areas" or the "Riparian Zone". Even though these areas represent only 2% of the land base they are essential to the health of a watershed. These areas serve as corridors for the movement of wildlife, provide increased biodiversity, help to slow flooding by holding back water and taking away some of its potentially destructive force, and provide stability for the shoreline which helps reduce or prevent erosion. Vegetation along shorelines can also lead to improved fish habitat by providing areas for fish and other aquatic animals to live and hide as well as provide shade which helps to moderate water temperature changes.
