The federal Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP) was created in 2000 as the Species at Risk Act (SARA) was being developed. Involving Environment Canada, Parks Canada and Fisheries and Ocean’s Canada, the HSP’s objective is to support voluntary stewardship-based approaches to protecting habitat for species at risk. “Species at risk” are the plants and animals that are listed, by the federal government, as ‘extirpated’, ‘endangered’, ‘threatened’, or of ‘special concern’. For a complete list of these species visit www.sararegistry.gc.ca.
MHHC emphasizes activities that will conserve and/or enhance habitat for species indentified on the SARA registry. Program delivery under this program is focussed in agricultural regions of Manitoba and largely in the southwest corner of Manitoba.
