In the 1980s, public and private agencies in Canada and the United
States began to design the most comprehensive habitat conservation
plan in the World. In 1986, the North American Waterfowl Management
Plan (NAWMP) was signed by the governments of the United States and
Canada, and later joined by Mexico. The plan was and continues to be
revolutionary in its vision. It transcends international borders and
promotes massive cooperative funding of land conservation programs
to protect habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife habitat throughout
North America. The primary goal of NAWMP is the return of waterfowl
populations to levels seen in the 1970s.
NAWMP is a partnership of farmers, ranchers and other landowners working
with agricultural land conservation organizations and governments to
ensure agricultural sustainability while enhancing the landscape for
wildlife, in particular, waterfowl.
