Riparian zones are places where water meets land. Found along our lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands, these zones contain the most productive and diverse wildlife habitat found in the prairie region. Healthy riparian areas play an important role in controlling erosion, reducing downstream flooding and maintaining  water quality. Riparian areas also provide critical food, water and shelter for wildlife and fish.

Though riparian areas are small in area, they make a major contribution to the health of the entire ecosystem. Riparian areas make up about 2% of the land base of Manitoba, but they contain the majority of our biodiversity. Healthy riparian areas are a crucial part of healthy rural landscapes.

When riparian areas have been impacted by human or livestock activities, they may require active management. MHHC’s Riparian Stewardship Program helps landowners manage these areas to maintain their natural values, improve herd management and sustain farm incomes.
